It's a good thing to be on the right track. Better still to be going in the right direction.
Not sure what that has to do with anything. I just wish someone had told me when I was younger.
There was one railroad track going through Elkhorn. Living in a one track town means you could go two ways. Neither was wrong. It took our grandparents all over the world. Then it brought them back before blacktop highways.
We quit riding that rail generations ago.
Now we've got roads going in every direction. We've got roads going in no apparent direction. We've got roads to nowhere among our roads to somewhere. Some of them are right and some of them definitely are not right. They're all tracks without rails but don't get off the rails.
It can be a long way down, even from the right track.
Which reminds me. I've seen at least 20 bears in the last month on various blacktop trails along the Kentucky-Virginia border, from Breaks to Lynch. I counted 9 mothers and cubs in one 3 mile stretch one afternoon, all standing, sitting or laying in the road completely unbothered by my car slowly rolling by.
Here's where this is going. For the last two weeks, I've found a bag of trash pulled from my trash cans and dropped on the ground with several holes torn into the bag. Trash pulled out of the bag is left right by the bag, nothing strewn all over the yard or alley.
So here's my question.
How big do you think my thoughtful trash bear is? Yogi lives on Hatcher Street in Elkhorn City. He really is smarter than the average bear.
I've gotten way off track here. Sorry about that. I've been looking for the right track but there are so many to choose from and they all go in two directions. Spaghetti junction you might say.
I guess I'll come clean. We're talking about the right track today because so many things seem to be on the wrong track. The country, the economy, the systems, you name it. I'm going out on a limb and saying many of you would say it's all on the wrong track.
I'd say I'd be with you. But the problem is that optimist disease. The glass has got water in it so we won't be thirsty.
There's another way to look at that track. You may want to turn around for this one. Maybe we're on the exact track we need to be on. We're on the right track, just going the wrong way.
Because the opposite of what we the people are getting would be the right way to go. The opposite of war is peace. The opposite of a theocratic oligarchy is what the founding fathers had in mind. The opposite of willful ignorance is an actual virtue. The opposite of lies are the Epstein files.
Remember them? I was just thinking nobody's mentioned them in a while so might as well remind you of the one thing they want you to forget.
We were on the right track on that one but we went the wrong way. Just turn this train around.
